Oakland County MI New "GREEN" Terminal Building Dedicated

Just got back from a “ribbon cutting” ceremony of the new LEED certified Oakland County International Airport Terminal Building. The ceremony included the usual political speeches and thank-yous, however, also included some surprises like F-16 flyovers and L. Brooks Patterson joking about “marijuana plants”. Yet, the real star of the “show” was the new terminal.

While strikingly beautiful and unique for a terminal building, it will forever be known as the first “LEED certified” airport terminal building in the United States. Sporting a large rooftop solar array, geothermal heating and cooling, solar water heating, LED and fluorescent lighting throughout, reuse of the prior terminal building site and basement, recycling of construction materials, low voc paint, carpet and adhesives used throughout the intereior, the building will generate up to 15% of its own energy and save a tremendous amount of money through heating and cooling the building with the geothermal wells. The parking lot even has electric energy pumps for electric vehicles.

Residents of Oakland County should be proud to see their county updating one of the busiest commercial airports in the country and doing it in such a sustainable, environmentally responsible and efficient manner. This new terminal should make a great first impression to all visitors arriving in Oakland County through the O.C. International Airport and hopefully lead to even more economic growth in the near future. Congratulations to all those involved in the project on a job well done !!!
